The leaves of the Voacanga tree are arranged in pairs opposite, glossy dark green at the top and pale green at the bottom. The white or yellow flowers are in small tufts either in the leaf axils or at the ends of the shoots.
The spherical, dark green fruits of the Voacanga tree, dotted with light green spots, usually grow in pairs and contain seeds embedded in yellow flesh. The plant contains a large number of alkaloids related to addictive substances such as ibogain, including some of the only known naturally occurring CB1 receptor antagonists.
The Voacanga plant contains an alkaloid called Voacangin, which is used as a precursor to the semi-synthesis of ibogain. The cleavage of voacamidin and vincamin increases the yield of voacangin.
Although the root bark of Voacanga Africana contains very small amounts of ibogain, these are not sufficient to achieve a medicinal or psychoactive effect.
In addition, extracts of this plant are used to make vinpocetin, a drug for Alzheimer's, and Vinblastine, a drug used to treat leukemia.
Voacanga has stimulating and hallucinogenic properties.
The bark of the Voacanga tree is traditionally used by the native West Africa in small doses as a stimulant at tribal celebrations where people dance and stand, as well as on strenuous hunting trips.
Shamans use the seeds of the Voacanga tree to evoke visionary experiences.
Voacanga Africana is also used to treat diseases such as Alzheimer’s to improve memory function. In addition, it is known to contribute to the suppression of drug addiction and has an antihypertensive effect.
Although the root bark of Voacanga Africana contains very small amounts of ibogain, it is not enough to achieve a medicinal or psychoactive effect.
In low doses, Voacanga has a stimulating effect without causing significant side effects.
In high doses, however, hallucinogenic experiences, vomiting and convulsions can occur.
